Traditionally , the FCT residents are naturally peasant farmers that indulged in the feeding of the entire North Central, extended to to North East and North West in some critical farming ingredients.
But , the new Minister of FCT, Nzenwo Nyesom Wike CON felt it is not enough to feed the environment alone , but stressed the need for mechanized farming that could be extended into feeding not only the entire country , but for exportation to neighboring African countries and non African countries, including across the globe.
To achieve these, the Minister had decided to partner with both local and international agencies charged with the promotion of Agricultural activities to achieve this feat , in line with both domestic and international requirements.
This was also inline with the provision of adequate farm inputs , both local and sophisticated, and the provision of fertilizers to enhance the land potentials.
In the FCT, the process has begun with the free and subsidized distribution of fertilizers to real farmers in the territory, not to only encourage mass farming, but create an enabling environment for residents to develop flare to go into both subsistence and mechanised farming, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to boost and make enough provision of crops at cheaper and subsidized rates to Nigerians .
The flag off of distribution of over 500 fertilizers to FCT farmers was inline with the promise of bumper harvest in the FCT and to also contribute more to other farmer states that had been the bane of the survival of the country interms of availability of enough harvest .
Not minding the cost of fertilizers and other farm imputs, the Wike led administration in the FCT aside addressing critical infrastructural, developmental , Health , Education, Security and Social services had decided to delve into farming to address poverty, hunger and starvation.
With the symbolic flag off, across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, coming coincidentally and timely during farming season , unlike the previous arrangements that occured after the season, an indicator that the leadership of FCT under Nyesom Nzenwo Wike meant well for the farmers of FCT and it’s environs.
With determination to address the farming season conscientiously in 2024/25 , no doubt , the leadership of the Minister under Nzenwo Nyesom Wike will also delve into dry season farming among many other varieties of farming in the FCT to boost seasonal farming across the FCT and country at large.
With a promise to provide more farming of different dimensions and shapes, residents of the FCT will now heave a relief with free and cheap distribution of fertilizers, the main stay of the economy of the FCT.
