The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced engagements with political parties and key stakeholders aimed at strengthening women’s participation and representation in Nigeria’s political process ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The engagement is part of INEC’s broader efforts to promote political inclusion, deepen democratic participation and ensure that all segments of society have greater opportunities to contribute to governance and national development.
INEC emphasized the importance of encouraging more women to participate actively in politics, contest elections and take up leadership positions at various levels of government.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for political party leaders and stakeholders to share perspectives and discuss practical measures that can help remove barriers limiting women’s participation in the political space.
Among the notable participants was the APM National Chairman and Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, who contributed meaningfully to the discussions. He spoke on the need for political parties to create a more inclusive environment where women are given equal opportunities to participate, contest and lead.
The APM National Chairman reaffirmed the importance of strengthening internal party structures and adopting policies that will promote wider participation, particularly among women and other underrepresented groups.
As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 elections, stakeholders continue to emphasize that increased women’s participation is essential to building a more inclusive, representative and sustainable democracy.
