Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda has announced plans to leverage climate predictions for boosting agricultural production and advancing environmental sustainability in Katsina State.
The Governor’s remarks were delivered by Prof. Mohammed Al-Amin, Special Envoy on Climate Change for Katsina State, at the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) presentation organized by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development in Abuja.
In the address, Governor Radda emphasized the state’s commitment to natural resource conservation and agricultural development. “The 2025 budget of Katsina State has given priority to areas of Natural Resources Conservation, Development and Value Exploitation,” the Governor stated.
He revealed that the State target to increase agricultural production by 75% of last years output. Adding that the state has equally allocated N81,840,275,739.00 toward achieving a 50% value addition to agricultural produce, which is expected to generate 2,500 new jobs in the agricultural value chain sector.
The Governor also announced a significant investment in water resources management, with a budgetary allocation of N52,832,219,322.17. “It is the target of Katsina state from 2025 onwards to harvest at-least 25% of the downpour from rainfall and keep it within the state for various economic and environmental uses,” he noted.
“This we believe will go a long way in boosting livestock, fisheries and irrigation agriculture. It will also ameliorate the microclimate of communities against excessive heat and the threats of drought and desertification,” the Governor assured.
Highlighting the state’s institutional framework for climate action, Governor Radda detailed the establishment of key bodies including the Katsina State Council on Climate Change, which he chairs personally, and a Technical Committee comprising MDAs and academia. “We are therefore ever-ready to help our people and Nigeria in general towards turning Climate Change into Climate Potentials,” the Governor affirmed.
The Governor credited last year’s seasonal climate predictions for helping Katsina become “among the least states hit by the disasters of Rainstorms, Floods, Droughts and Windstorms.”
He expressed the state’s commitment to utilizing the 2025 predictions to create green jobs and enhance agricultural productivity.
