The recent allegations of extortion involving the Kogi Election Tribunal judges have sparked outrage among various civil society groups in Nigeria. The joint outcry by groups such as the Progressive Advisory Forum for Good Governance (PAFOG), Justice for Sustainable Democracy (JSD), Coalition for People Right in Governance (PRG), Northern Initiative for the Promotion of Justice for All (NIPJA), Advocacy for Social Justice (ASJ), and Patriotic National Alliance for Justice (PNAJ) highlights the gravity of the situation.

The civil groups have come together to strongly condemn the reported extortion of tribunal judges, who were allegedly offered a significant sum of six billion naira in foreign currency to influence the judgment in favor of the APC candidate, Usman Ododo. This revelation has raised serious concerns about the integrity and independence of the judiciary in Nigeria.

The group’s joint communique calls for an urgent and thorough investigation into the allegations to prevent a breakdown of law and order in Kogi State. They point to compelling evidence of electoral malpractice, including over-voting and fake certificates, as further cause for concern.

Emphasizing the importance of an impartial judiciary free from political interference, the civil society groups stress the need for a fair judgment that accurately reflects the evidence and the will of the people. They warn that any failure to deliver justice could have severe repercussions for Nigeria’s democracy.

Comr Shuaibu Muhammed, speaking on behalf of the groups, has urged all stakeholders to intervene and ensure that the judiciary carries out its duties with integrity and transparency. The call for transparency and accountability in the judicial process is crucial to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the democratic system in Nigeria. Failure to address these allegations could undermine public trust in the electoral process and erode confidence in the country’s institutions. It is imperative that the authorities act swiftly to investigate these claims and uphold the principles of justice and fairness in the Kogi Election Tribunal case.
