Life for him In the beginning was merely an everyday existence, there was no promise—only dust, hunger, and a routine template standing at the edge of a life already decided for him. The earth knew his name before books ever did.

Jibrin Samuel Okutepa was not born into the convenience of dreams. He was born into necessity. Into soil that demanded sweat before it offered survival. His father, a farmer, believed in the certainty of the land—not the uncertainty of letters. And so, the boy learned early: that sometimes destiny must be stolen quietly from the grip of tradition.

He ran—not just from home, but from limitation. Not in rebellion, but in pursuit.

Seventeen years old, when most stories are already underway, his had barely found its first alphabet. He entered a classroom late, but not empty. He carried with him the stubborn philosophy of the deprived: that time lost must be repaid with intensity. This man self taught himself in the school of letters.

By day, he laboured.

By night, he listened—to the silent insistence of possibility.

A mechanic’s grease stained his fingers,

a fireman’s heat toughened his breath,

but somewhere beneath the soot and strain,

a lawyer was forming—unseen, unannounced.

There is a peculiar kind of courage in those who begin late.

They do not waste motion.

They do not negotiate with doubt.

From the School of Basic Studies to the halls of the University of Jos, his journey was not marked by brilliance in the conventional sense—no polished pedigree, no privileged ascent—but by something more enduring: persistence sharpened into purpose.

When he was called to the Bar in December 1991, it was not merely a professional milestone. It was a quiet revolution. A reordering of what was supposed to be possible.

And yet, the law for him was never just a career. It was a moral theatre.

He built his chambers, yes—but more importantly, he built a voice. A voice that refused allegiance to power when power strayed from justice. In a country where institutions often bend, he chose to stand.

He entered courtrooms not merely to argue cases, but to interrogate the conscience of a nation. Electoral fraud, judicial compromise, the slow corrosion of democratic ideals—these were not abstractions to him. They were battles. Personal. Urgent.

To rise from obscurity is admirable.

To rise and still choose resistance—that is rare. He redefined what resilience should be- looked impossiblity in the eyes and reframed it to possibilities.

When he was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2011, the silk did not crown him—it confirmed what struggle had already declared.

But the deeper story is not in the title.

It is in the philosophy he embodies:

That dignity is not inherited—it is constructed.

That justice is not a profession—it is a responsibility.

That beginnings, no matter how delayed, are still beginnings powerful enough to rewrite endings.

His life reads like a quiet argument against despair. Today, a formidable reference in Nigeria ‘s judicial landscape – from an impossible curve to an iroko wall paper of greatness.

With many recorded strides, Chief Jibrin Sam Okutepa is honored in reverence by the Supreme Leader of the Igala Kingdom HRH Matthew Alaji Opaluwa Oguche Akpa II as the Ogohi Atta Igala.

This is the icing on the cake for a boy of yesterday who defied the limitations of time to rewrite the template of time. His Royal Highness Jibrin Samuel Okutepa- the man who echoed that if you begin—truly begin—

with conviction as your compass, even the law will one day learn your name.

All hail the boy lawyer who taught himself the letters of life.

Impressively musing
