In a powerful address at the one-year anniversary of “The Victoria Show” and the launch of the book From Silence to Strength, Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Abdullhai Ibrahim Halims, condemned the rising cases of rape and molestation targeting women and girls across the nation. He pledged that lawmakers would strengthen legal frameworks to ensure justice for victims and impose severe sanctions on offenders.
Halims, representing Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro Constituency in Kogi State, emphasized Parliament’s commitment to reviewing existing laws and enacting new legislation to address gender-based violence. “Through parliamentary action, we will tackle this issue head-on,” he stated. “We have the means to amend, enhance, and enforce laws—that is our duty.”
While acknowledging that enforcement falls outside legislative jurisdiction, Halims affirmed that creating robust legal mechanisms remains a priority. He also addressed broader security challenges, asserting that the government is “strict and determined” to curb violence and banditry.
The event spotlighted author and host Jennifer Hembafan Alih, whose book shares harrowing true stories of abuse survivors. Halims praised the work as “a voice for the unheard” and commended Alih for her courage and compassion. “This book challenges us to break the culture of silence and build a safer, more supportive society,” he remarked.
Alih, in her address, explained that the book aims to combat social vices, particularly violence against women and children. Reflecting on her motivation, she said, “I reached a moment where I could no longer accept silence. We must encourage people to speak out, and as a community, we must learn to listen without judgment.”
Calling for collective action, Alih urged society to reject violence in all forms. “Violence is not inevitable—it can be defeated. Let us create the compassionate communities we deserve,” she emphasized.
The event concluded with a strong message of hope and a call to action, underscoring the role of legislation and societal change in eradicating gender-based violence.
