In a landmark judgment on February 27th, 2025, the Kogi State High Court, sitting in Lokoja, upheld the nomination, selection, and appointment of His Royal Highness, Ajofe Chief Jonah Idris Okai, as the rightful occupant of the Onu Abocho throne. The ruling, delivered by Honorable Justice Folorusho Ajayi of High Court No. 7, stated that the nomination, selection of Onu Abocho by the kingmakers, and the subsequent approval of the appointment by the Kogi State government, was legitimate.
The judgment further dismissed all cases instituted against Onu Abocho, affirming his appointment as valid. Confluence News reports that a similar case, brought by another claimant in the Anyigba High Court, was also dismissed on February 18th, 2025, due to a lack of merit. This case involved one Sehu Amade before Her Lordship, Honorable Justice Awa Yusuf.
Regarding the case’s legal costs, the judge ruled that although the winner is entitled to compensation, the spirit of unity within the ruling house led to a decision to refrain from awarding costs.
Professor Benjamin Ogwo, representing Onu Abocho, expressed appreciation for the judge’s erudite judgment. He urged all parties to continue living in peace for the progress and development of the community. Ogwo noted that the judgment encompassed four cases in one, as there were four claimants to the Onu Abocho stool.
Barrister S.O Ayobe, speaking on behalf of JJ Usman, SAN, who represented Attah Igala and Igala Area Traditional Council, commended the judge for the excellent judgment. The resolution of this legal dispute surrounding the Onu Abocho stool is expected to bring unity to the community.
Onu Abocho, Ajofe Chief Jonah Idris Okai, extended his gratitude to all the ruling houses and the people of Biraidu, emphasizing that this victory belongs to all sons and daughters of the area. He called for everyone’s support to move the community forward.
