In the complex geopolitical landscape of Nigeria, the North Central zone stands out as a significant region that has been overlooked in terms of development initiatives. While the country is divided into six geopolitical zones—North East, North West, South East, South West, South South, and the North Central—the latter remains conspicuously absent from the list of regions benefiting from dedicated development commissions. This omission is particularly troubling given the myriad of challenges the North Central zone faces, including rampant banditry, violent clashes between farmers and herders, and illegal mining activities that have plagued states such as Kogi, Niger, Plateau, and Nasarawa.

The North Central zone, which includes states like Benue, Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara and Plateau, has been grappling with significant security and socio-economic issues. The persistent violence from bandits and herders has not only resulted in loss of lives but has also led to the displacement of communities and a decline in agricultural productivity—an essential lifeline for many in the region. Furthermore, illegal mining activities have exacerbated environmental degradation and contributed to the local economy’s instability.

Despite these pressing concerns, the North Central zone remains without a dedicated development commission, unlike its counterparts. The absence of such a commission has hindered the region’s ability to address its unique challenges effectively and to harness its potential for growth and development. The need for a North Central Development Commission has been echoed by various stakeholders, including political leaders, community organizations, and civil society groups.

Recently, there have been indications of a growing consensus among senators from the North Central region regarding the establishment of a development commission. However, the motion advocating for this initiative has faced delays, raising questions about the underlying reasons for the slow progress. Senator Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader from Benue State, is reportedly among those championing this cause. Yet, despite the apparent unity among North Central senators, the motion’s advancement appears stalled.

The delay in establishing a North Central Development Commission is concerning, especially given the urgency of the situation. The region deserves a focused approach to development that addresses its unique challenges and leverages its resources for the benefit of its people. A dedicated commission would not only facilitate the allocation of funds for critical infrastructure and social services but also provide a platform for coordinated responses to security threats and economic development initiatives.

As the discourse continues, it is important for stakeholders, including the federal government, state governments, and civil society, to rally around the push for a North Central Development Commission. The time for action is now. The people of the North Central zone have waited long enough for the recognition and support they deserve. It is crucial that the motion for the establishment of a development commission is prioritized and expedited, ensuring that the region can finally embark on a path toward sustainable development and lasting peace.

The North Central zone is at a crossroads. With unity among its leaders and the pressing need for development, the establishment of a North Central Development Commission could be a transformative step toward addressing the region’s challenges. It is a call to action for all stakeholders to recognize the importance of this initiative and work collaboratively to bring it to fruition. The people of North Central Nigeria deserve nothing less.
