The removal of three respected kings in Kogi State today by Governor Yahaya Bello should ignite a firestorm of criticism, shedding light on what is obviously, an abuse of power driven by political vendettas. The governor’s decision to dethrone these traditional leaders should in no doubt stem from their neutrality and impartial stance in the November 11 2023 Kogi State Governorship elections. A move that should raise serious concerns about the erosion of democratic values and the autonomy of traditional institutions.
Traditionally, the role of kings in Nigeria extends beyond ceremonial duties; they are often seen as the custodians of culture, providing a voice for their communities. The abrupt removal of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abdulrazak Isah Koto, the Ohime_Igu, Koton_Karfe, His Royal Highness, Sam Bola Ojoa, the Olu Magongo of Magongo and His Royal Highness, Samuel Adayi Onimisi, the Obobanyi of Emani should call for many questions for the governor’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
This act represents a clear overreach of political power, with the governor using his authority to settle political scores rather than upholding the values of justice and fairness.
In a healthy democracy, diversity of opinion and the right to support the candidate of one’s choice should be celebrated, not punished. The arbitrary removal of these traditional leaders sends a chilling message to others who may hesitate to align themselves with the governor’s political agenda.
The governor’s actions risk destabilizing the delicate balance between politics and tradition, undermining the mutual respect that should exist between elected officials and traditional leaders.
As concerned Kogites, we call on civil society groups, human rights advocates, and concerned citizens to lend a voice by calling on the governor who has less than a month in office to respect the stools he has desecrated by this unthinkable action. We demand an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dethronement and seek assurance that political differences will not be used as a basis for undermining the autonomy of traditional institutions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that the democratic fabric of Nigeria must be upheld, and leaders should be held accountable for actions that undermine the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for traditional institutions. It is imperative that a robust and impartial investigation takes place to ensure that the rights and dignity of traditional leaders are protected in the face of political maneuvering.
