Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has recorded more than 20,000 newly registered voters, a development political stakeholders say could significantly influence grassroots participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disclosure was made by the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area and State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Dr Uwemedimo Udo, during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah.
Uwah, who is also the Political Leader of Uyo, used the meeting to mobilise political stakeholders and party members ahead of the elections.
He expressed confidence that Uyo would increase its electoral support for Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
According to the SSG, the development recorded under the Eno administration provides residents with sufficient reasons to continue supporting the governor.
“Things are better with Uyo now than in the past. The Governor deserves the support of Uyo people,” Uwah said.
The SSG called for unity and greater discipline among political stakeholders, while cautioning against activities that could distract the local government administration from its responsibilities.
He specifically advised party members against premature campaigns for the Uyo Local Government chairmanship, noting that such activities could divert attention from governance.
Uwah further announced plans to engage separately with youths and women in Uyo, saying the initiative would provide an opportunity to deepen political participation among different groups within the electorate.
Dr Udo, in his remarks, thanked Uwah for convening the meeting and stressed the importance of cooperation among political leaders and stakeholders.
He said the registration of more than 20,000 new voters represented an important development for political participation in Uyo.
The new voters, he noted, could strengthen grassroots engagement as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Uwah also expressed confidence in the electoral prospects of Senator Aniekan Bassey, Hon. Mark Essiet and Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, predicting favourable outcomes for the candidates.
Development projects highlighted
Former Chairman of the Local Government and Civil Service Commission, Hon. Monday Eyo, also called on party members to remain committed ahead of the elections.
Eyo commended Governor Eno’s administration for infrastructure development and appointments across the state.
He cited the Uyo Village Road as one of the projects he said demonstrated the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life of residents.
The meeting brought together senior government officials, political leaders, councillors, supervisors and other stakeholders.
Among those present were the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia; Hon Anietie Eka; Sir Charles Udoh; Mrs Uduak Eyo Ansa; Mr Ime Uwah; councillors, supervisors and other political stakeholders.
The stakeholders’ engagement is expected to form part of continuing efforts to consolidate grassroots political structures in Uyo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
