The good people of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State are crying out to the Federal and State Governments, as well as their elected representatives, to come to their aid over the very poor condition of the major road linking their communities. The road, which serves as a lifeline for movement, trade, and social activities, has deteriorated seriously and now poses a great danger to road users and residents, especially as the rainy season approaches.
From Ogbonihia, the road appears to be splitting into two, and if urgent action is not taken, there are strong fears that the road may become completely non-motorable during the peak of the rains. The erosion has continued to worsen, cutting deep into the road and threatening to divide it entirely. This situation has caused great concern among motorists, commuters, and local traders who depend on the road daily for their livelihood.
Also, the condition of the road from Ukporo-Akala towards Ajakagwu is a serious cause for worry. The road is so narrow and damaged that vehicles are forced to stop and wait for one another before they can pass. This has led to frequent traffic delays, near accidents, and unnecessary hardship for road users. People who regularly ply this route are fully aware of the suffering, and those who visited Dekina during the Dekina Day celebration and other social events can testify to the terrible state of the road.
It will be recalled that the Anyigba–Dekina–Shintaku–Ogbabo road project was approved on 26 January 2022 during a Federal Executive Council meeting and was awarded to Messrs TEC Engineering Company Nigeria Limited under Contract No. C/No 7239 by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing Headquarters, Mabuchi, Abuja, during the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. The people of Dekina are therefore appealing passionately to the Federal Government, the Kogi State Government, and all concerned representatives to revisit this project, come out with clear and workable plans, and take immediate steps to put everything in order for the safety, development, and overall well-being of the people.
