Penultimate, the situation of environmental sanitation and services in the nation’s city has been so critical, affecting both health , human and wellbeing of many Nigerians resident in the FCT and area councils .
Aside huge health implications, indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the FCT poses alot of hazards from diplomatic disposition to security of lives and properties, as well as portray the environment as lacking decency and sanity.
Hence, under the current dispensation, the FCT under Nyesom Nzenwo Wike had taken extensive plans and decisions to rejig the sanitation department of the nation’s city with a view to delivering on its mandate both at FCT and it’s area councils, in the area of ensuring a robust sanitation program and activities that will keep them neat and accessible.
Though, the previous arrangements of using contractors and outsourcing had elapsed, the Wike led administration is contemplating double approach through direct execution of FCT sanitation exercise and also outsourcing to allow a better supervision and execution of evacuation activities, dumping sites among many others desiring programs, that will keep both the nation’s city and area councils accessible and devoid of dumping of wastes indiscriminately.
This will involve provisions of more workers , both out source and permanent, equipment as well as accessible sites to move both wastes and unwanted items , inaccessible to local and private individuals, who will encroach to fetch iron or other items from the site.
Already, the FCT administration has begun experimenting the move as the expiration of the previous contractors lapsed in April , so as to familiarise with the process and procedures for movement of wastes to available dumping sites .
This is been done simultaneously with the process of acquiring new equipment and getting the needed hands as well as procurement process that will galvanise the PPP arrangements been proposed by Wike led administration.
The direct labour been embarked upon by the FCT administration will not only provide first hand knowledge, but an opportunity to ensure adequate administration of sanitary situations both in the nation’s city and area councils.
Having accessed the performance of the contractor’s over the he years , with some lapses , while others are performing both below and in line with the contractual agreement, direct pause will enlivened the enabling encouragement to take a lasting decisions on the sanitation problems bedeviling the FCT and it’s area councils.
With this development, the ongoing construction of green barriers across the FCT expected to move to the area councils was part of plans to create a new sanitation programs under the Nyesom Nzenwo Wike led administration in the FCT.
The multi billion naira projects will assist in no small measure against the indiscriminate dumping, sanitation problems , particularly using empty places as toilets among many other irrelevancies by the general public.
With the new investment in sanitation, it will also reduce the multiple investment in health and social security been carried out by the present administration under Nyesom Nzenwo Wike.
