Creating a new federal body for overseeing local government elections may lead to duplication of efforts and resources, especially when INEC already has the infrastructure and expertise to handle elections. Strengthening INEC’s capacity and mandate to oversee all elections, including local government polls, could be a more efficient and effective approach.
On Thursday, July 18, a proposed legislation to create a federal body responsible for overseeing local government elections successfully passed the first reading in the Senate.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa (APC – Niger East), sponsored the Bill known as the “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024.”
