The Federal government has directed a comprehensive review and strengthening of academic curriculum of police training at Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano.
Besides, the government revealed that significant investment is urgently required to fix the accommodation, healthcare centre, and other failing infrastructure at the police academy, aiming to meet world class standard.
Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, made the assertion on Wednesday during her supervisory visit to the degree-awarding police institution in Kano.
The Minister disclosed that President Bola Ahmad Tinubu administration is extremely committed to reposition the Nigerian police force to align with modern day police and confront the emerging security threat.
Hon. Sulaiman-Ibrahim whose visit coincided with the ongoing recruitment screening exercise of 10 course regular cadets, reminded that the desired reform in the academy must begin with meticulous selection of candidates.
She maintained that credible selection of new intakes into the academy will determine the future of nation’s security architecture, urged the management to ensure the security is entrusted in the hands of individuals not found wanting in character.
Acknowledging the manpower deficit in the Nigerian police force, the Junior minister said the need to expand the admission policy to accommodate more candidates to undergo professional police training cannot be overemphasized.
“On the infrastructure front, a significant investment is required. Hostels, health centre, classroom, training grounds and other important facilities will need to be built or undergo major upgrades to meet world class standards in terms of a conducive and inspiring environment for leaning.
“The institution is expected to set the standard for excellence while ensuring that each graduate displays the highest ideals of professionalism, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the protection of our communities.”
The Commandant of the academy, Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Sadiq Abubakar intimated the minister that shortlisted candidates for the screening are currently undergoing physical, medical and computer-based test to ascertain their credibility.
AIG Abubakar noted that the exercise which runs between 6th October and 29th November, has captured candidates from 23 states of the federation. While assuring that names of candidates that scale through the rigorous screening will be made public added that members of the selection board will ensure candidates are selected based on merit.
